Tablets trending smaller in 2013

Since the introduction of the iPad mini in 2012, the full sized version has been losing sales to the more compact tablet. This transition was predicted by many when the iPad Mini was announced, and as 2013 rolls on, it seems like they were right. Similarly, many other tablets are being released in smaller sizes, such as the new Kindle Fire HD and Nexus 7. Along with strong sales from the Galaxy Note as well, it seems that mobile computing’s first instinct, to go small, was correct.

Though there are a variety of cases, bags and carriers specially designed to create a convenient way to carry iPads and their like, it’s becoming more obvious that the full sized versions aren’t much more convenient than a simple netbook, or other small laptop. These smaller tablets and “Phablets” are tapping into the true power of tablet computing, it’s mobility.

While we have smartphones for basic mobile computing, they rarely can match the power, speed, capabilities and even battery life of a tablet, but the small size of the phone makes them much more convenient for daily use, as they can fit into a pocket or small bag easily. Ultimately, as more options like the Note and iPad Mini become available, they’ll take an even larger part of the market away from the full sized tablets, and maybe that’s good, allowing for more innovation and progression.
